Train programme for holiday season
Plans are in place to manage rail freight movements in and out of Auckland and Wellington over the Christmas holiday period while construction crews carry out major works on the rail networks in those cities.
Blocks of line will be in place to undertake maintenance and upgrade works for the electrification of the Auckland commuter network and for tunnel works in Wellington.
The Auckland-Papakura and Auckland-Whangarei lines will be closed from Christmas Day through until 4th January 2012, with road bridging operations in place for containerised cargo.
In addition, there will be a three week closure of the lines between Auckland Port and the Auckland CT Site from 25 December 2011 where we will also be roading containers.
Trains will also be diverted between Palmerston North and Wellington via the Wairarapa Line over the Christmas/New Year.
The Auckland and Hamilton container transfer sites will be fully resourced during this period to ensure the seamless movement of freight and customers can expect to receive a high level of service, says general manager rail operations, Aaron Temperton.
